When you stress the body with short acute stress like fasting, hot/ cold exposure & exercise, you shut down these growth pathways and allow for the opposing pathways to upregulate. During this time of short acute stress fat metabolism, autophagy, stress resistance and cellular repair pathways are allowed to express. The human body is programmed to kick on this adaptation for survival! These activities activate AMPK. AMPK is a signaling pathway that activates this survival program.
Therapeutic amounts of stress applied to the body is known as hormesis. Hormesis generally elicits a favorable biological response and is severely lacking in our current society! Examples of beneficial stressors include
fasting, hot/ cold exposure, hypoxia & exercise.
